虽然emo这个网络语刚火起来，但这个词本身存在的时间却很长，大致产生于90年代末00年代初。

emo/?i?m??/，也叫emocore/?i?m??k??/，全称是Emotional Hardcore，即情感硬核，或情绪硬核化说唱。

在词典中的释义是：

即一种与朋克相似的摇滚乐，但包含更为复杂的改编曲，歌词更多触及情感主题。

emo大致产生于90年代末，但到了2000年以后才有一批乐队将这个风格带红。

它的乐手形象以及行为很特别，比如黑色直发，修身的衣服和紧身牛仔裤，帆布平底鞋，眼线或眼影。

同时，emo也可指喜欢这种“颓废式”音乐的乐迷。

emo乐迷常追随情感核时尚，典型形象是穿紧身牛仔裤，蓄黑色长发，以冲动、敏感、忧郁为特征。

也就是说，emo和“丧”、“忧郁”、“伤感”等是划上等号的。由此才引申有“我emo了”，“我直接emo了”等网络流行语。
